Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast urged the British government to order the police to stop their violent confrontation with the people, IRNA reported in the early hours of Tuesday. Mehmanparast asked the British government to start dialogue with the protesters and to listen to their demands in order to calm the situation down. The Iranian official also asked independent human rights organizations to investigate the killing in order to protect the civil rights and civil liberties.
Wie sich die brennenden Ladenstraßen in den englischen Großstädten innenpolitisch auswirken werden, ist noch offen. Allerdings, und das ist das besonders Bittere daran, ist es überhaupt nicht fernliegend, dass Cameron die Versuchung verspüren wird, den Sarkozy zu machen und seine ramponierte Autorität mit dem sprichwörtlichen Kärcher wiederherzustellen. Oh, wie sie sich die Bäuche halten würden in Teheran…
Aber vielleicht kommt es auch ganz anders. Wenn sogar der Daily Telegraph, das konservativste Druckerzeugnis seit dem Ende der Gegenreformation, jetzt schreibt, dass nach den Unruhen eine Art sozialdemokratischer Wohlfahrtspolitik “the only solution” sei, dann ist wahrhaftig vieles möglich.

As political and social protests grip the Middle East, are growing in Europe and a riot exploded in north London this weekend, here’s a sad truth, expressed by a Londoner when asked by a television reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent?
“Yes,” said the young man. “You wouldn’t be talking to me now if we didn’t riot, would you?”
The TV reporter from Britain’s ITV had no response. So the young man pressed his advantage. “Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you.”
